How local recording works (and why it is just as good)

Here is the technical reality: the browser MediaRecorder API captures your screen as a media stream. WebCodecs encodes this stream to MP4 (H.264) in real-time. IndexedDB stores the encoded data locally. When you export, the browser triggers a file download. This is the SAME pipeline that desktop apps use — the only difference is where the code runs (browser tab vs desktop process). The quality is identical: 1080p or 4K, 30fps or 60fps, H.264 encoding, AAC audio. The file you download is a standard MP4 that any player can open. The performance is comparable: modern browsers handle real-time encoding with hardware acceleration. The file size is the same. The only difference: no data leaves your device.

Offline recording: what works and what does not

AFTER INITIAL PAGE LOAD, here is what works offline: BASIC RECORDING — screen capture, microphone audio, webcam overlay. All work because they use browser APIs. EDITING — trim, split, add text overlays, adjust audio. All local operations. EXPORT — MP4 and GIF export. File construction happens in the browser. WHAT DOES NOT WORK OFFLINE: INITIAL PAGE LOAD — you need internet for the first visit. AI MODELS — captions, noise removal, background removal models need to be downloaded first. If cached from a previous online session, they work offline. If not cached, they require internet. The practical approach: load the page while online, use AI features to cache the models, then you can record and edit offline. For truly offline use, load once while connected, then use offline.

Data management: what happens to your recordings

WHERE RECORDINGS ARE STORED: in your browser's IndexedDB (a local database). This is per-origin — only nyxhora.com can access its own data. HOW LONG THEY LAST: until you close the tab, clear browser site data, or clear all browser data. There is no automatic expiration. HOW TO CLEAR THEM: close the tab (data is cleared for session storage), clear site data in browser settings (Chrome: Site Settings > nyxhora.com > Clear Data), or clear all browser data. FILE SIZE LIMITS: IndexedDB typically allows several GB of storage. A 5-minute 1080p recording is approximately 200-400MB. Most modern devices handle this without issues. IMPORTANT: once you export and download the MP4, you have the file permanently. The IndexedDB copy is temporary — closing the tab removes it. Always export immediately after recording.
